Professor Phil West   B.Sc. (Forestry) Hons, PhD (ANU)

Prof WestProf West was a scientist with the Division of Forestry and forest Products of the CSIRO for 20 years. His research speciality was the growth behaviour of trees in forests and modelling their growth for the prediction of wood yields. He has an extensive publication list on these topics.

He is one of Australia's most experienced forest growth modellers, both with conventional and process-based models. He has worked across a wide range of Australian forest types from plantations to tropical rain forests.

In his later years with CSIRO, Prof West was the Director of the Cooperative Research Centre for Tropical Savanna Management in Darwin, which considered sustainable management practices in the Australian tropical savannas.

He left CSIRO in 1997 to become a forestry consultant. Major consultancy tasks he has done include

l   Development of yield management systems for the large eucalypt plantation estate of Forests NSW in the north of the state,

l    Determination of the sustainable yield of firewood supply from the Murray-Darling Basin,

l    Estimation of carbon sequestration by forest plantations and other vegetation types.

l   Validation and development of forest growth and yield modelling systems for various Australian forest owners.

He is an Adjunct Professor of Southern Cross University and lectures in their Forestry School in Plantation Silviculture and Mensuration & Inventory. He is the author of Tree and Forest Measurement, a text book on forest measurement, and Growing Plantation Forests, a text on the science of plantation forestry, both written for students, professional foresters, scientists and laypersons.
