Medicinal Cannabis Use

For thousands of years cannabis has been used as an effective healing herb for many different ailments. Our grandparents remember being able to buy packets of cannabis cigarettes or tincture over the counter only 60 years ago.

We should remember that earlier this century in Australia, as everywhere else, cannabis was freely available as medicine over the counter in the form of tincture or cigarettes. Was cannabis-induced mental illness a worry before Prohibition?Early this century, virtually every medicine in drug stores (now "chemists") contained one or more of the most popular medicinal herbs — opium, cannabis or coca. Because they worked; and for centuries humans have known that. It should not be forgotten what a large part pharmaceutical empires played in getting medicinal herbs prohibited, and still today in maintaining the status quo.

It is an interesting point that although cannabis was sometimes linked to idleness, it was never known to cause mental or physical sickness. At the Embassy we have held seminars and run surveys on medicinal cannabis use in coordination with Nimbin GP David Helliwell. All data convinced us that cannabis is a relatively safe and useful drug which many people can use for genuine relief from common ailments.

Until the modern prohibition era, cannabis had been used and recorded as a medicine for over 4500 years. Cannabis treatment has been authoritatively shown to:

  • relieve pain associated with arthritis and rheumatism

  • treat glaucoma

  • prevent migraine headaches

  • be an adjunct to psychotherapy

  • control spasticity from Multiple Sclerosis and paralysis

  • ease withdrawal from alcohol and narcotics

  • relieve menstrual cramp

  • relieve asthma & hayfever

  • help overcome insomnia

  • block epileptic seizures

  • treat many gastric and appetite-related diseases

  • help people with cancer, AIDS and Hepatitis C to relieve stress and depression, eliminate nausea, reduce pain, stimulate the appetite and so fight "wasting" disorders.

Seven states of the USA, Canada, Great Britain and the Netherlands are all legislating legally prescribed cannabis for approved patients. Its time for a trial in Australia!	A reliable supply of medicinal quality cannabis is necessary for proper medical treatments. Most people cannot afford it, and many end up in real poverty trying to do so.

Many doctors are aware of their patients’ cannabis use, putting them in a difficult situation—as many other doctors are unaware of their patients’ cannabis use.

Unquestionably, the stress caused by prohibition creates more use of the very herb it seeks to suppress, after all it is a relaxant!
